Sharona's Top 25 Plus Size Fashion & Styling Tips

Having worked in the plus size clothing industry now for almost 6 years, I have come across a number of fashion and style related issues again and again.

For some people, these tips might just be common sense, but for others they may be a whole new way of viewing the fashion world. It really depends on where you have been in your life, how highly you value fashion, and how prepared you are to experiment. If you haven’t been prepared to experiment, and have instead been more interested in hiding out in oversized black clothes, I hope that these tips will give you a little more confidence to get out there and play around with your style.

Life is meant to be about having fun, and so is fashion! So now I want to share some of my most common tips for the curvaceous fashionista to be!

1. Identify Your Shape

Once you know your shape, you will be able to learn what styles of clothing will work best for you based on some key principles of styling.

There are 7 shapes for plus size ladies with varying names: Triangle (aka pear), Inverted Triangle, Diamond, Rectangle (aka banana), Oval (aka apple), Hourglass, Figure 8 (bigger hourglass).

Learning your shape is empowering. Once you learn where you fit in, you can learn how to dress to compliment your shape. Plus size body shapes are slightly different to the shapes for thinner women. Your body shape can change depending on weight loss or gain, but key physical features will generally stay the same, so your body shape generally stays the same too.

2. Don't Be Afraid Of Colour!

Wearing black is the obvious choice for a bigger girl, because let’s face it, we all grew up being told that black makes you look slimmer. But wearing colour makes you feel good, and gives you a better, more positive energy about you. It can enhance the tones in your skin, and even if you still want to wear black, you can really boost a black outfit with a few splashes of colour.

There are so many beautiful clothes and dresses out there designed specifically for the plus size woman, that it would almost be a shame not to experiment! If you’re not used to wearing colour but want to give it a try, start small with a colour top under a black cardigan, or a colour scarf over a black top, and progress from there as you feel more comfortable.

If you’re not sure about what colours will work best for your skin tones, then why not see a Colour Stylist to point you in the right direction? Many women feel better about wearing colour after a consultation with a Colour Stylist. You may be advised to wear a particular set of colours to make you look more vibrant. But just remember, your colours can change over time, so don’t be afraid to experiment with what makes you feel good.

3. Prints, Patterns, Stripes, Colours!

Don’t be afraid of wearing large prints or stripes or bold colours- just wear them in moderation. If you’re going to wear a large print or stripe top, then match it with a plain bottom and jacket.
If you’re going to wear a crazy colour or outrageous pattern, wear it on a part of your body that you want to flatter, not a part of your body that you want to hide.

There is nothing wrong with stripes, and anyone who has an out and out rule of no stripes, is missing out! Just don’t wear crazy patterns or prints from head to toe! As with junk food, so with patterns, everything in moderation!

4. Taking The 'Girls' Shopping.

Wear your best bra when trying on a new dress or top. This will help you to see where your ‘girls’ will actually sit, and should help to define your waist as best you can.

If you don’t have a ‘best’ bra, then go out and get yourself a bra that lifts and supports your ‘girls’ as well as possible. This can be difficult for those ladies who have been given E cups and higher by the powers that be, but there are specialists available to help you if you look hard enough, so invest in a good supportive bra because it will help your back and shoulders as well.

If you don’t know your bra size, and can’t find a shop to help you with a fitting, there are online resources to help you work out your bra measurements. It is worth measuring yourself every time you get a new bra as weight loss or weight gain will impact your bra size and no one wants to feel their circulation being cut off, or experience sagging with the wrong size bra. Treat your ‘girls’ with respect, and they will have you feeling fab!

5. Love Your Curves In Shapewear.

Shhhhh... It's the little secret that everyone's hiding. Plus size shapewear is an invaluable tool when wearing a dress or fitted clothing. It will help smooth lumps and bumps and will give you a sexy feeling that will have you exuding confidence.

Shapewear is helpful for every body type. Even the slimmer ladies wear shapewear to smooth their curves underneath a fitted dress. If you’re like me, you’ll be wondering why slimmer ladies need shapewear at all, but let’s face it, all women want to feel that they look their best, and shapewear is a little confidence trick that can assist our self esteem.

But for the plus size gal, there is the added challenge of getting plus size shapewear that doesn’t roll down or up. No one wants to feel like sausage meat squeezed into a casing and popping out all over the place, so it’s really, really important to get good quality shapewear that stays where it’s meant to. If you’re taller, you will generally need longer shapewear so that it sits in place. Make sure your shapewear is not too big because it won’t suck you in enough, and not too small so that you can breathe without cutting off circulation. Not all brands are created equal so it may take a few purchases to get a good comfortable fit of shapewear, but when you find something that’s right for you, you will love it!

6. Confidence Is Sexy.

Wear an outfit that makes you feel good, because that feeling will have you glowing. Not everyone has confidence, but everyone can have confidence. It’s just simply knowing that you look good.

The worst thing that you can do for yourself is to tell yourself negative things, or to listen to negativity whether from another person, or from a negative voice in your own mind. If you listen to negativity, it just makes it harder to rise above and feel good about yourself. If you don't like something about yourself, you have two options. 1. Change it, or 2. Accept it.

To foster a sense of confidence before leaving the house, I always recommend getting practice in a new outfit by wearing it at home. Try walking around your house wearing the outfit that you’re about to wear out for at least a few hours. Stand in front of the mirror, and say positive things to yourself. Be kind to yourself. If you don't like something about your outfit, change it. Take your time to get to that good feeling place of knowing that you look good, because the reward will be worth it. And when you leave the house, remember that feeling. Remember that image of yourself in your head that made you smile.

No one can resist a positive and confident person, so when you’re in a good place, try working your charms and see what happens!

7. Don't Be Afraid To Try A Belt.

Many plus size women won’t go near a belt because they may not suit every shape (usually apple shape women hate belts), but if you have a waist measurement that’s smaller than your bust and hips, even if only by a little, then a belt can help to accentuate your waist.

Belts can be worn in 3 different places; below your bust (This will accentuate your bust so not recommended for the big busted ladies unless you want to turn some heads!), on your waist (this will define your waist), and on your hips (this is a more casual look that will draw attention to your hips, rather than to your stomach, so can work well for many body shapes).

Try adding a belt over the top of a cardigan to create more shape, or change up that little black dress with a colourful belt. If you’re going to wear a long top and long skirt, create shape with a belt underneath the bust or on the waist. Play around with what feels good, with different widths of belts, different tops, and dresses, and remember to have fun with it!

And don’t fear, if you’ve never had a belt because you have struggled to find them in bigger sizes, click here for a great range of plus size belts.

8. Accessorise!

Coloured scarves, jewellery, hats, handbags, shoes, tights. Don’t wear them all at once, but pick a few that work with your outfit to bring the look together.

If you’re like many plus size women you’ll already have a range of accessories as so many of us have struggled over the years to get clothing that suits, so when shopping with our thinner friends, it’s easier to get accessories. But do you wear them? If not, dig them out of the closet and see what is still gorgeous.

My general rules of thumb for wearing accessories: if you have a big chunky necklace or scarf, you only need small earrings, if you have big earrings only wear a small necklace, if you have fabulous shoes or boots, then show them off with some neutral stockings, if you have some fabulous tights, wear them with simple boots or heels, hats create a super cute and playful look but don’t work with every outfit, you need different handbags for different occasions like a small clutch for a gorgeous plus size dress, or a big oversize bag for a cute but chic casual look.

So much advice to give! But what it comes down to is creating balance in your look. Don’t over kill, and don’t go without! Developing your own sense of style means playing around to see what works for you and is about creating a look that you genuinely love, so remember to have fun with it!!

9. How To Put On A Corset By Yourself.

Putting on a plus size corset by yourself can be difficult, I will admit. I am asked all the time how to put on a corset so that the fella or friends don’t have to help. My answer is always the same:

1. Don’t be in a hurry,
2. Stand in front of the mirror and watch what you’re doing,
3. Be calm and patient,
4. Put the air conditioner on,
5. Have a glass of wine (not essential) and relax!

Remember that corsets are not functional fashion, they are fabulous fashion, they are not designed for breathing, they are designed for looking amazing and sexy! If you’ve ever seen images of a corset being put on in the olden days, the lovely dames had maids to help strap them in, so it is not easy if you’re doing it by yourself. If you do choose to ask for help from your loved one, remember it can all be a part of the anticipation (but hold on to a wall or you could go flying!). Believe me, corsets don’t stay on for long anyway when they are for ‘personal home use,’ so getting your significant other to help out can be a good thing!

One last tip if you are a big busted lady (DD or above) and you’re planning to wear your corset out for an evening of partying, make sure you’ve done the ‘jumping jacks’ test first at home. If you do happen to pop out, you will need to fix the situation with shoulder straps and/or a strapless bra for extra support. If your corset doesn’t come with shoulder straps, you can purchase some from a haberdashery shop and attach them separately for extra support.

10. What's Your Size?

Don’t worry about the size that’s written on the label. Just wear clothing that fits! Don’t hide in over sized clothes, and don’t try to squeeze into something that’s clearly too small!

Every manufacturer and retailer has different sizing, and different fabrics can fit in different ways depending on stretch etc, so just do your best, and wear what feels good. There is no one sizing system. Remember, you are not a number. You are a person. The number is a guide, but is not always correct and should not influence your self esteem. If you don’t like the number, then get empowered and change your habits.

There is no point in wasting time wallowing about what number is on your clothes! Accept it or change it (or cut the label off)!

11. What's Your Hair Style Statement?

Your hair is your greatest accessory! It is on show no matter what you wear. If you put in effort, people notice. If you put in no effort, people notice. So if you make a statement about your hair no matter what you do, why not be conscious of the statement you make?

With one trip to the salon, you can create a fabulous hair style that suits you. You can colour it, change it, tie it back, do whatever you want to it! Just don’t ignore it! And if you don’t like it, it will grow back (or you can get hair extensions)! Hairdressers are not cheap, but if you take pride in how you look, and you love fashion, then it’s worth investing in a cut and colour that you will love every time you look in the mirror.

The same goes for your eyebrows. A lovely set of eyes brows will frame your face and stand out in pictures so don’t neglect them! Create a shape that frames your face, and if you have light coloured brows and want to go darker, then try a colour change at the salon. (If you don't believe the difference that eyebrows make, then try looking up pictures of celebrities without eyebrows on Google!)

12. Get Your Sexy On!

Whatever your size, don’t be afraid to try some lingerie. A good sex life is not reliant on being a Victoria Secret model. Many guys like a bigger girl! I have seen and talked with some of the most awesome couples in my plus size clothing shop who have full and active lives together and her larger size never stops them! Bigger ladies are in demand, and plus size lingerie is perfect to keep things fun in the bedroom!

Don’t be afraid to experiment, and let your inner diva out! Tapping into your own source of confidence in front of someone you feel comfortable with, is something that you can carry with you through all the days of your life, knowing that you can be as sexy as anyone else when you work with what you’ve got.

Remember, sexy is an attitude, not a dress size.

13. Fake It!

These days, sun-baking is frowned upon, but everyone seems to have a tan. If you’re not lucky enough to have been blessed with naturally olive skin, then don’t be afraid to go and get a fake tan when you have a holiday or special occasion coming up.

If you’ve a plus size lady and you’ve never had a fake tan because you’re terrified of what the tanner will think of your naked body, just remember, they’ve seen it all. A fake tan can help reduce the appearance of cellulite and give you a nice over all glow, reducing the appearance of blotchiness. But the real point here is why should the thinner girls have all the fun?? Never let your size stop you from trying new things!

If you really don’t want to go naked in front of a tanner, there is a multitude of self tanning products on the supermarket and chemist shelves that you can play around with over a weekend when you don’t have plans. Not all tanning agents are the same quality, so it may be a bit of trial and error to find the right one for you, and the right colour match. Don’t trial a new product just before you’re about to go out, in case it’s not the right product for you. Exfoliate your body before applying to make sure you get an even tone, and pay attention to your hands, feet, and creases to get an even application.

A tan may seem like a trivial matter, but for the odd occasion when you want to glow when going sleeveless or showing off some leg, it can be a great little helping hand.

14. Fatshion Trends.

Following fashion is traditionally something that only skinny girls could do in the past. The runways were never a place for women above a size 8. But fashion has broken many boundaries. It always has, and always will.

Fabulous fashions are available in all sizes now, but let’s face it, not all runway fashions translate well into bigger sizes. Don’t become a fashion victim by trying to copy the runway trends verbatim. Just wear what looks good on you and your shape. Wear what you love. Wear what feels good. Wear what you want to wear. Be who you wanna be yeah.

Don’t be afraid to push boundaries, but don’t forget that you are your own unique person, and just because ‘the designers’ tell you it’s going to look good, doesn’t mean it is going to suit you. And alternatively, just because a super skinny model is wearing it, doesn’t mean you can’t experiment with a similar look. Remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Not everyone is going to necessarily like your look, but what matters is what you think, and how you feel. The rest is all about your confidence to pull it off.

If you’ve ever watched the fashion channel for a few hours, you would most likely be well used to saying ‘I like it’ or ‘I love it’ or ‘I hate it.’ That’s fashion for you! It can bring out the discerning judgmental side in you if you’re not careful! Not every look works, but with confidence, you have a better chance to pull it off. And if you wear it once, and change your mind, you can always reinvent your fashion.

15. Re-Inventing & Up-Cycling Fashion.

Re-inventing fashion is as simple as taking something from your wardrobe and turning it into a new look. You can take the easy option and simply add some different accessories like some statement jewellery, a broach, or a belt. Or you can change the buttons, sew on some ribbon, dye it, paint it, or glue some embellishments on.

If you’re handy with a sewing machine or overlocker, you can give the item a little nip and tuck to make it shorter or add some darts to create a different shape, or you can view a youtube video to see how to turn a pair of jeans into a denim skirt. If you have the time, and a little creativity and vision, you can easily add some little embellishments to an old favourite to save it from the junk heap and turn it into a one off piece of designer plus size clothing made by you!

Re-inventing or up-cycling clothing can be really fun and creative, can help you breathe life into your existing wardrobe, and can even save you a little cash if you’re strapped, so why not give it a try with something that you’re ready to throw out? And if you’re not ready to do this to a whole outfit, you could always just pick one item like an old jacket, funk it up a little with some new buttons, some cute embellishment, or change the length, and then match it with a sexy new skirt or pants and heels, to create a shabby chic look using opposing style statements. This can look really cool, but just remember, it’s meant to be fun, so enjoy the process!

16. Dress Up Your Wardrobe!

Get into a dress! People say to me often that they don’t have anywhere to wear a nice dress to, which is why they don’t have one. I say to them, if you buy a nice dress, you will look for reasons and excuses to get out there and wear it!

Without the right wardrobe, it’s easier to be a ‘no’ to life. If someone asks you to accompany them to a special evening or function, you are more likely to pass up the opportunity or be overcome by anxiety. But if you have the right clothes, then you are more likely to feel confident and just get out there and do it!

Being a ‘yes’ to life is much more fulfilling and will give you a new lease on life! Get ready and prepared, and see the good things start to show up. Create the mental space for joy and excitement, and they will appear. If you build it, they will come!

17. Fabulous Footwear For The Plus Size Fashionista!

Comfortable, functional, and gorgeous footwear is a must if you’re a curvy fashionista. If you’re like most women, you’ll probably have a rather large number of shoes in your wardrobe. That’s because you can’t wear the same pair for every occasion! We mix and match our shoes with our outfits, because shoes are essentially an accessory that make a statement about you.

Each season, footwear fashion changes, so how do we grow our footwear collection to match our outfits without taking over our entire house? Just grab a couple of key pieces of footwear each season to match with your clothing favourites, and throw out or donate any that you no longer wear, or that are not suitable anymore.

Versatile shoes are really important, ie ‘can I wear these shoes again with other outfits?’ Also ask yourself ‘is this shoe comfortable, or am I going to wear it for 5 minutes and change into my flats?’ Personally, I insist that my footwear is comfortable. As with many of our plus size customers, my foot is flat and size 11 with a (medium) wide calf, so finding a good fitting shoe and boot is slightly more complicated but really important. Also being a vegetarian, I personally don’t support the leather industry, so for me, shoes need to be all man-made which makes the search for the perfect pair of shoes even more difficult.

There are more online shoe stores for big feet out there than ever before, so do a few searches online and you will find a handful of good places to get your shoes. Just a little word of warning though if you’re buying shoes or boots online: make sure the company has an easy returns policy if the shoe is not the right fit. Also when buying from overseas, be aware that it can be costly sending them back. Finding a pair of shoes that ticks all those boxes can be hard, but there are more and more suppliers out there every year. So don’t give up!

18. Sick Of Your Tights Rolling Down?

Finding the right tights is really important if you want to wear dresses and skirts all year round. If your tights roll down in public, it can be extremely embarrassing. Now that curvy girls finally have a great range of tights and stockings to choose from, we want to ensure that they are going to stay up. So how do we do that?

Firstly, buy the right size. If you have the right size, they should stay up. But even though tights come in all sizes these days, if you are taller, you may still need to buy a size up unless they are specifically tights for bigger and taller girls.

Or you can try my little trick of wearing a tighter pair of underpants or shapewear over the top of your tights. This will at worst give you enough time to get to the bathroom and pull them up, and at best will keep them up all night.

Also plus size stockings are a super sexy option for wear under your skirts and dresses, or matched with lingerie in the bedroom, but the curvy gal might have a harder time keeping them up. Skinnier girls have legs that are straight up and down. Adding some roundness or curve to a leg will mean that the best way for thigh high stockings to stay up, even if they are made bigger and have a silicon top, is to wear a suspender or garter belt with them.

Check out our fabulous, versatile, funky, and sexy range of plus size tights, plus size stockings, and plus size pantyhose available in different colours, patterns, thicknesses, and sizes.

19. Shopping For Plus Size Clothing.

As a plus size lady myself, I know how painful and awful the shopping experience can be. When you are hopeful that clothing will fit and it doesn’t, it can be gut wrenching and soul destroying. This is why shopping for plus size clothing online has become so popular over the years; aside from the convenience, the anonymity means that you won’t have to face any potential emotional turmoil, at least in public.

But if you are the kind of shopper who likes to touch and feel your clothes and try them on before you buy, it can be tough to find clothing shops that offer a good experience if you’re a but curvier then a size 16. But that is no reason to give up!

We have created a space with our plus size clothing store in Melbourne, where people can enjoy shopping. And there are other shops out there too where people actually care about the needs of the plus size shopper. They may be few and far between, but they are growing in numbers. Don’t give up, don’t hate yourself for not fitting into the mold, don’t hate the shop for not being progressive enough. Just have faith that you will find a place that will be the right style for you.

I invite all plus size ladies to come to my shop at 90 Charman Rd, Mentone, Victoria, to have a fun and friendly shopping experience. I make the extra effort to help you enjoy yourself, and I really hope that you will find what you’re looking for. And remember, as with life, what you put out is what you get back, so if you go into an experience with a good attitude, you are more likely to get it back and find what you like!

20. Makeup Made Easy!

Makeup is not something that you should hide behind. It is something that you should use to enhance your natural beauty! How did you learn about makeup? Did you watch your mum, older sister, or friend applying it? Or did you just get in there and have a go? Did you do a professional makeup course, or did you read tips and tricks in fashion magazines? However you learned or didn’t learn about makeup, there are a few key things that you should at least know how to do.

Not everyone wears a full face of makeup everyday, but as our eyes and lips are our most expressive facial features, if you want to learn how to enhance these features, you can always jump onto youtube and watch some videos from the professionals, so you don’t end up looking like Mimi from the Drew Carey Show! Youtube videos can show you how to improve your makeup application skills for special occasions, and can recommend what products to use.

If you don’t really like wearing makeup, you don’t have to, but if you’re like most women, you’ll at least want to apply some lip colour and mascara for special occasions to make your key features stand out. So it’s worth investing in a good quality long lasting colour stay lipstick and some non clumping mascara. I also live and die by a good colour stay eyeliner and recommend it to anyone. But remember, as with fashion, so with makeup: Confidence comes from playing around in your own time, and finding what you like, what styles of makeup to wear with different styles of clothing, and what you think looks good when you look in the mirror.

If you’d like to learn more about how to look amazing in makeup, then do yourself a favour and book in with someone who can show you how it’s done. It’s never too late to learn about makeup, and confidence will come from playing around at home or with someone you trust. I guarantee that all those models and celebrities out there either have professional makeup artists working for them, or have learned how to apply makeup properly themselves (or they rely on photoshop!) Either way, celebrities, like the rest of us, certainly don’t get up out of bed looking red carpet ready!

What Not To Do With Your Makeup!

21. Balance: A Key Fashion Principle.

Balance is a really important concept to learn in fashion. If you are going to wear a loose fitting top, you should wear a fitted straight leg pair of pants. If you are going to wear a long maxi skirt, you should wear a shorter more fitted top. You want to create a look that is either bigger at the top or the bottom, but not both.

This principle will give you shape which is important if you don't want to look bigger than you are. There is no point in trying to hide behind your clothing. It DOESN'T work!! You will look your best if you work WITH your shape, and highlight your assets, so if you are one of those ladies who likes to wear oversized everything, then why not practice the balance principle until you're confident enough to wear more fitted clothing that shows off your curves?!

If you do want to break the rules and wear something bigger on the top and bottom, you should create some shape with a belt, a long necklace, or scarf. Using a long necklace or scarf will elongate your body, and take the eyes away from your width.

If you were painting a picture, you would look at what colours or shapes work well together. When creating an image for yourself in fashion, you should take a step back, look in the mirror, and ask yourself ‘does this work?’ If it doesn’t work, change something about the outfit using your balance principles. And as always, don’t be afraid to play around and have some fun.

22. Plus Size Jackets & Coats For All Seasons.

If you want to change up your wardrobe quickly, and take an outfit from casual to smart, or dressy to casual, add a jacket. A few good jackets can really complete your wardrobe.

A versatile black structured jacket is imperative if you work in the corporate world and want to turn a black skirt or pants into a professional looking suit. A nice winter jacket or coat is always a great purchase and a necessity in the colder months, a colourful trench coat is great for spring when it’s not as cold but you want some stylish outerwear, a cute denim jacket will dress down any lovely dress or skirt, and some bolero’s or shrugs are always important if you have sleeveless dresses and don’t like to show your arms.

A good blazer can take a corset or a plain outfit to chic and sexy in no time with some accessories, and if you’re happy to experiment a little, try turning up the sleeves to create a boyfriend jacket look that’s super cute!

In Summer, a structured short sleeve lightweight jacket will give you the look, but without all the heat.

And always remember that if you’re planning on wearing a winter or work jacket with tops or jumpers underneath, or if the jacket has no stretch in the fabric, you will probably need to go up a size or so to account for the added bulk.

23. Jeans That Fit.

It may sound obvious, but as we all know, jeans do tend to stretch out with wear, so when buying a new pair of jeans, you should really choose the fitted pair over the looser pair. As long as you can do the buttons up and sit down in them comfortably without cutting off circulation, then they are the right size.

So often people come into my shop looking for jeans and thinking that they need a size larger than they actually need. I spent my younger years in oversized jeans too, so I understand the urge to not show your shape. But as I have gotten older and let’s hope wiser, I have come to realise that a fitted pair of jeans is essential!

A good pair of jeans will show your leg shape and will be firm around the bottom, creating a nice shape. If they are too long, just get them taken up, don’t drag them on the ground. If they are too short, then you can always roll them up and wear as ¾ jeans (If they are a straight or skinny leg), or wear them in winter tucked into your boots. But it is always best to get the right length of jeans if you can.

A good pair of jeans can be your best friend, and can be dressed up or down for many occasions, so make sure they are snug and look hot!

24. If You've Got It, Flaunt It!

It’s really easy to spend time hating ourselves as women, and it’s even easier as plus size women to fall into the whole ‘I’m fat so therefore I am ugly’ way of thinking that’s been reinforced by others all our lives. But that is just not true. We each have something beautiful about ourselves, even if we are too shy to admit it to other people, we owe it to ourselves to admit it to ourselves.

We all have parts of our body that we are not so fond of shall we say (even if you're size 8!), and I would suggest that we each have a part of our bodies that we do like (whether we are prepared to admit it or not!). It’s really important to find something about your body that you do like, whether it’s your bust, or your lips, or your eyes, or your arms, your booty, your legs, or whatever. It's also good to be clear about the parts of your body that you really want to cover. This will help you to find outfits to suit your shape and work with your self esteem. So once you have identified the thing that you like about your body, try to find a way to accentuate it so that you show that you are proud of it. As they say, if you’ve got it, flaunt it!

Your best feature is something that you should be happy with and not afraid to flaunt- something that you can draw confidence from. So if you really struggle to find something, then look deeper. And once you find it, work it girl!

And just remember a little bit of balance is always a good thing. It’s great to flaunt what you’ve got, but there is a difference between flaunting it, and letting it all hang out! Once you find a happy medium, you will find flattering styles that really work for you.

25. Make Time For Yourself

When creating a stylish look, it’s best to not be in a hurry. Take your time or plan ahead. The reason women have a bad rap for always being late is that as we create each layer of our image from hair, to make up, to clothing, accessories, etc, these things take time, and a work of art cannot be rushed!

So either get up earlier in the morning to give yourself time to get prepared, or plan ahead the night before. The best way to give up on fashion is to just not have enough time and not even try. So many mothers come into my shop after 5 or 10 or even 20 years of looking after the kids and say ‘now it’s time to look after me. Help me! I want to change my look!’ I always start by reminding them that they are a beautiful woman, and it’s time for us to get to work finding them something that makes them feel sexy!

We only get one life, so we may as well enjoy it, and if getting dressed up and looking good gives us a better experience of life, then we need to make time for that. When we’re single, we have time to make ourselves look fabulous. Is this just to attract a mate, or is it because it makes us feel good? When we’re in a relationship, we may question why we put in the effort when there is so much else going on in our lives. But if you don’t put in the effort, your self esteem starts to drop as you look around and see others who do put in the effort.

Even if you don’t have time every day to get yourself dolled up, why not consider setting some time aside once a week or once a month to remind yourself of what a beautiful, gorgeous goddess you are! As a busy woman, if you allocate and spend some time every day or every so often on loving yourself, you will feel happier, and find that you have more to give, life gets easier, people don’t stress you as much, and your world becomes a better place.

This is the ultimate balancing act. This is life.
